How many squares do I need to make a puff quilt?
If you have scrap fabrics or fat quarters that you would like to use, instead of precuts, simply cut your fabric into 5 inch squares. You will need 180 squares for the top. Cut out 180 squares from the white or muslin fabric that are 4 1/2 inches. These will be for the back of each puff.
Sizes may vary but the standard packs are either 10 inches by 10 inches, 5 inches by 5 inches, or 2.5 inches by 2.5 inches. So just decide what size blocks you would like to build with. (As for me.. I usually choose the 5×5's…and that is the size I would suggest starting with.

A 20 strip jelly roll would start out as an 800″ mega strip (20 strips each 40″ long). So 4 folds of that would give you a little quilt that is that's 16″ rows or 32″ long and 50″ wide 800″ first fold to 400″; second fold to 200; third fold to 100″ fourth and last fold to 50″.

Reasons why not to prewash. You don't want your precuts' size to change. Precuts (jelly rolls, charm packs, layer cakes, fabric panels etc.) will unravel or get distorted and no longer be the standard size due to shrinking if the fabric is prewashed.
Place the comforter into your washing machine carefully. Whether you have a front-load or top load washer, your comforter needs room to agitate and tumble – it can't get clean otherwise. If you have a top load washer with an agitator, let the comforter fall loosely around the post and try to keep the load balanced.

In honor of the 20th year of the guild, here is the link to instructions for making a Turning Twenty quilt, which uses all of 20 fat quarters, with no leftover pieces. You will need a 10-1/2” x 10-1/2” square, a 7-1/2” x 10-1/2” rectangle, and a 7-1/2” x 17” rectangle. For the border cut a piece 4” x 17”.
For a generous quilt with plenty of overhang you can leave up to 20 inch or so overhang on each sides and at the foot and leave 20 inch or so extra on the head part also so that you have enough to tuck under the pillows. You can add or minus the extra overhangs as per your preference.
What Size Quilt Can You Make With Two Charm Packs? The largest quilt you can make with two charm packs is a 40.5” square quilt. This is a great size for a baby quilt, and if you add some sashing and borders, you could easily get this quilt up to the size of a small throw.
For a standard queen-size quilt (84"x92"), you would need about 323 5"x5" squares to create the entire quilt. These measurements wouldn't account for much shrinkage and would give you a 12" drop on a stanvdard queen-sized mattress.
