How do I know if my drums are food grade?
The easiest way to check is to look for the Resin Identification Code—i.e., recycling number—which identifies the type of plastic material. The code consists of a triangle of arrows surrounding a number between 1 and 7. Generally, numbers 1 through 7 indicate food grade plastic.
Check out the bucket's universal recycling symbol; this relates to what type of plastic the bucket is made of. You should see the classic recycling symbol with a number inside of it. Generally, food grade plastics will be labeled with either 1, 2, 4, or 5.
On the bottom of the bucket, there should be a recycling symbol, which also contains a recycling number between 1 and 7. This number will be stamped between a triangle of arrows. Generally speaking, the numbers that denote food grade standards are 1, 2, 4, and 5.
Food grade buckets are manufactured with release agents that are safe and non-toxic. Regular buckets may be manufactured with release agents that leave toxic residue that, while safe for incidental contact, is not safe for storing food.
If you use plastic containers for storing food, buy code numbers 2,4 and 5 only. They are food grade plastics. Code #1 plastic is also safe to use. But it is made for single use.
The designation of Food Grade on a drum means the packaging has been determined as safe for long-term storage of foodstuffs. The plastic has been tested and determined to have no harmful dyes, no recycled plastic containing leachable chemicals or any of substances that could be harmful to humans.
White, 5 gallon food grade buckets with lids. These storage pails are made with approved plastic 90 mil thick, making them amazingly strong and solid.
As one of the most stable and inert forms of plastics, HDPE is the most common type of plastic used for food storage. Most “food safe” 5 gallon buckets are made from HDPE. 4 - Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE)
There is a common misconception that all containers made of white plastic or HDPE plastic bearing recycle symbol 2 are food grade containers. This is not true. If a container is not clearly labeled as “food safe” or being made of food grade plastic, then you should assume that it is not food grade.
IBC totes carrying food must be certified as food grade to prevent contamination. There are different types of food grade totes, with the most popular being stainless steel tanks or poly-caged totes. Food-grade totes are certified by the DOT/UN. To tell if an IBC tote is food grade, check the sidewall for markings.
What is the difference between food grade and non food grade?
Food grade typically refers to a material, and essentially states that the material doesn't contain any toxins or dangerous substances. For something to be considered food grade, the material must be able to be cleaned effectively, and not allow any foreign particles to find their way into food.
Normally Food Grade is a LOWER quality than Lab Grade. Lab Grade normally has exhaustive testing on it to determine all impurities. The lab is using this as a reagent and they need to know all that. Food grade means that it won't cause human disease.

See if there is an abbreviation PETE, LDPE, or PP.
Look for one of these abbreviations beneath the recycling symbol to identify plastic that may be considered food grade. If the PETE plastic may be food grade, it will have a number 1 in the center of the recycling symbol.
HDPE FOOD GRADE PLASTIC BARRELS
Constructed from HDPE, food grade plastic barrels are hardwearing, rigid and durable, meaning they can withstand shocks and transport food safely and in one piece.
- Plastic #1: PET or PETE – (Polyethylene Terephthalate)
- Plastic #2: HDPE – (High Density Polyethylene)
- Plastic #4: LDPE (Low Density Polyethylene)
- Plastic #5: PP – (Polypropylene)
Look to see if the container is labeled as unbreakable or microwave-safe. If it is, that's a good indicator that it contains BPA. Get rid of it. If you see a label indicating that the container is handwash only, it's probably made of acrylic and therefore OK to keep.
Look for products labeled as BPA -free. If a product isn't labeled, keep in mind that some, but not all, plastics marked with recycle code 3 or 7 may contain BPA .
Food Grade Plastic Materials
They examine all ingredients and additives to ensure they are safe and will not affect the taste, odor, or color of the food. They will also test the materials for adverse responses to temperature changes, humidity and moisture, or the presence of other chemicals, oils, or alcohols.
Indoor or Outdoor? No Problem, This White Closed Head 55 Gallon Plastic Drum is Corrosion Resistant. BPA free to operate as a water barrel, this closed head 55 gallon plastic drum also suits food, chemicals, liquids, cosmetics, electronic parts, solids, hardware, and household products.
Why are these 55-gallon blue plastic barrels so ubiquitous? Also known as poly drums, they are the internationally-approved container for shipping liquid food products, world-wide.
Are all blue plastic barrels food-grade?
While blue plastic barrels are food-grade, chemicals can leach into the plastic over time and taint any food being stored. Equally, barrels should be used to store one type of chemical only to avoid any cross-contamination.
The most common lining for a lined steel drum is a phenolic coating. Phenolic linings provide a chemical protection between contained materials, such as food, and the metal of the drum. The phenolic is mixed with an epoxy to give it extra flexibility – this prevents it from cracking if the drum undergoes any damage.
For students hoping to garner further knowledge about the drums with the ABRSM, there are four distinct percussion categories with eight grades that can be studied depending on the field of expertise desired.

High quality steel drums are UN food grade certified, making them an excellent (and importantly, safe) choice for foodstuffs.

Some of the varieties of polymers for the manufacture of plastic 55 gallon drums are polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and HDPE. Dense thick fiberboard is the main material for cardboard or fiberboard drums.
The Definition of “Food Grade”
To be defined as food grade, materials need to be non-toxic and safe for consumption. “Food grade is just a term.
According to the rules of the ABRSM, music exam grades after grade 5 cannot be skipped.
The Grade 5 Drum exam is for candidates who have the intermediate skills and techniques and have developed an increasing sense of stylistic conviction. This is demonstrated through instrumental techniques, rhythmic complexity, coordination and balance of the kit and maturing solo and improvisation work.
What are the levels of drums?
- Level 1: Basic groove.
- Level 2: Adding ghost notes.
- Level 3: More bass drum.
- Level 4: Bass drum double strokes.
- Level 5: Basic triplets.
- Level 6: 16th note triplets.
- Level 7: 32nd notes.
- Level 8: Switching up note values.
If it's labeled "1," "2," "4," or "5," the bucket is safe to store food in. You can also check the bottom of the bucket to see if there's a cup and fork symbol, which means the bucket is safe for storing food. Also, if the bucket still has a label on it, you can look to see if the manufacturer labeled it as food grade.
A conventional 55-gallon drum has an interior radius of 11.25 inches, meaning it has a 22.5-inch interior diameter. The characteristic steel ridges add an extra half-inch to the barrel, making the external diameter 23 inches.
Food-Safe Film Finishes
Film finishes leave a coating, or film, on the surface of the wood. However, oil-based finishes soak into the wood. Shellac, derived from Indian lac bugs, is a common food-safe film finish. It is highly water-resistant.
This refers to the amount of weight that the drum plus its contents has been tested to hold. Although it might actually be able to hold a higher weight, the UN rating denotes the weight it's been tested to hold. If you ship over what the drum is tested for, you risk being cited.
SS 316 – When making food-quality stainless steel containers, SS grade 316 is typically a preferable option for everyday cooking for smaller families. When dealing with salt and stronger acids like lemon or tomato juice, 316 SS is more chemically resistant. It is typically used in a range of applications.
The number indicates type of container: 1=Drum. 2=Barrel. 3=Jerrican. 4=Box.
